Biography
Phoebe Tarleton (born 1998) is an English violinist, currently based in Amsterdam where she is quickly building a career as a sought-after orchestral and chamber musician.
With a broad repertoire of classical to contemporary works, Phoebe has graced the stages of nearly all major orchestras in the Netherlands, collaborating with esteemed conductors such as Matthias Pintscher, Richard Egarr, Daniele Gatti, Elena Schwarz and Michal Nesterowicz among others. Her commitment to showcasing the richness of lesser-known composers is displayed through her role as concertmaster of the Zemlinsky Chamber Orchestra. Under her leadership, the ensemble has explored and performed exciting new repertoire and arrangements, including the Dutch premiere of Zemlinsky’s Kammersymphonie arranged by Richard Dünser.
As a string quartet player, Phoebe was part of the Nederlandse Strijkkwartet Academie (NSKA), receiving guidance from top chamber musicians such as Lukas Hagen, Quatour Danel, Luc-Maire Aguera and Nobuko Imai. In 2019, her quartet won first prize in the Maassluis chamber music competition and took part in the Virtuoso and Belcanto Festival in Lucca. Phoebe is now a member of the newly formed quartet, The Jay Quartet, based in Amsterdam.
In 2021 and 2022, Phoebe was a member of the innovative Grafenegg Academy which focuses on the exchange of artistic ideas and freedom in playing together whilst removing any limitations faced in a typical professional musician’s life. In 2023, she was selected for the prestigious Gustav Mahler Academy for two consecutive years where she will tour Europe’s top concert halls, captivating audiences with Mahler’s 5th Symphony played on original instruments.
Phoebe's musical journey began with a full scholarship to Wells Cathedral School, where she excelled in the string chamber orchestra, Wells Virtuosi and received the Yfrah Neaman prize for 'best string player.' She then continued her education at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam under the mentorship of Peter Brunt and Tjeerd Top, graduating in 2021.
